Wednesday, October 7th 2026 – CHILLIWACK – For the sixth week in a row, the Trustees for Change candidates have highlighted a major proposal, presented by candidate Hugh Hamilton.
SD33 compares adequately to other School Districts in BC. Where we have fallen behind is internationally, and it’s a significant gap. At the elementary school level we can be up to a year or more behind. In grade 5, in the second week back from summer vacation, students were learning the 3Xs table, whereas in Mexico, students are being introduced to area and perimeters in mathematics at this age. You can of course find all this information online. I have a teaching background and can help my child with reading and writing. My wife excels at math and can help in that regard. We both work remotely so we’re able to spend that time. Others are not so fortunate.
Instead of comparing our students to other districts in BC, why aren’t we comparing them to the best? Why don’t we make Chilliwack the best? When we are setting the most important goal, doesn’t it make sense to have our students lead the way in education excellence?
There is no simple and clear answer as to why our students are not at the top level. You need to elect the 5 candidates from Trustees for Change who will make this their absolute, shared top priority.
We will engage the parents. We have done a lot of door knocking in this campaign and spoken with a lot of families. They want to be their child’s partner in education but they don’t feel they’ve been heard. They have been shut out, but not anymore with Trustees for Change. We will find out what’s important, and what’s needed in the family unit to reach the goal and put those items in the board’s agenda to discuss.
Everyone knows the board has had a disastrous experience with communication the last 8 years, just watch the videos from their meetings. Basic communication was a struggle. The Trustees for Change Board will communicate effectively. We’ll discover roadblocks that prevent us from reaching our goal and we’ll work through them to the end. We’ll involve and work with families to guide the decision making.
It is time to stop the nonsense. Elect the 5 candidates from Trustees for Change who share the ultimate goal, make our students the leaders in education excellence.
